First, I love the cover! This is a well researched book with plenty of facts and humble skepticism. I am rather ignorant about fashion, nevertheless, this book kept me interested because her long life journey passed through so many storms and festivities, it helped to understand the history of the 20th century, particularly the art world through her connections with artists. As it is very common with successful, extraordinary women in history, her indefatigable spirit and determination toward her work and survival are what makes her an extrarordinary human being, much more than a fashion icon.

Lisa Chaney promises an "intimate look" but does not deliver...the book is filled with facts about the war, how the countries are affected by the war, how the war affects the economy, the tedious backgrounds on Chanel's lovers, etc. When Chaney does mention Coco (whom she annoyingly refers to as "Gabrielle", although everyone called her Coco), it is a stale, tired bit of information that has been published many times.....this book is a waste of time and money....instead, read "The Improbable Return of Coco Chanel", written by her assistant, Richard Parker...

This is an In -depth biography of Gabrielle Chanel with a more candid view of her than previous books about her. It does a good job of conveying the social and political norms of Chanel's times. Chanel was a fascinating yet tortured woman who helped shape the idea of womanhood in our modern era. She influenced much more than just fashion. She had the courage and instinct to risk the accepted norms of her time. She gave woman the freedom to dress and act without the restrictions of the stilted past.

I have been interested in the life story of Chanel for some time.Such a dark cloud hung over this woman it's surprising she maintainedher creativity.No holds barred pertaining to social stigmas, wealth and poverty.I'm finding it so detail oriented that it puts one in the era with aclear understanding of the struggles due to the customs and beliefsof that time.If you have an interest this is some what of a historical documentation.I'm glad to have found it.

This is a very thoughtful biography, not just of the woman, but of the era. Gabrielle Chanel was a fascinating woman, who led a fascinating life in a time of great change, especially in the realm of the arts. Chaney captures this excitement in her writing, which reads almost like a novel.

I am quite some time around in the Software quality and Testing business, and I have seen and read a lot of books about that topic: Structuring by V-Model, different analysis and design methods, testing as part of a process model and so on.The issue that I had with most, nearly all of them was: Why start testing at the end?Why not prevent defects instead of having to find them? And be made responsible in case, they slipped through.This book is different, like the company.They try to catch a defect before it can make its way to the code, they will rather put off functionality, if it is not properly tested, and so on.All things, that I personally think, make so much sense, and which are not followed by the PMs and Devs of the current business.As I said before, this book is my favorite at least for this year. If not for the decade.It motivated me to get back to programming, to be able to facilitate automatic testing to the dev people to overcome the pain for them. Great!

Ein Überblick über Googles Testorganisation. Zumindest die, die Google bis vor kurzer Zeit hatte. Denn am Ende des Buches wird erwähnt, dass Google inzwischen in eine andere Richtung geht.Testmethoden oder Testwerkzeuge sind nicht das Thema des Buches und werden deshalb höchstens erwähnt. Eine Ausnahme ist ACC (attributes, components, capabilities), dem die Autoren einige Seiten spendiert haben.

The book covers the topic fully, but I would say it is also very interesting for people thinking of applying for a job at google...

I like the book's content. What I don't like is its printed format. This book is printed over-sized on standard size 8.5 x 11 inch stock. The printed area is only about 4.25 x 6.5 inches; the font is very small, the margins are very wide, and the title is not printed on the spine. I will buy the book again in a different format -- either hardbound or digital.

The book itself is 10X11 inches in size (aprox.). But the printing inside the book is 5x7 and 4 point font! Unless you are able to read with a microscope, this is almost impossible to read! Either the book should be made smaller and save a few trees, or make the print big enough to read!

The content is excellent, but the printing is so small that the book is very difficult to read. The print takes up about 1/3 of the page so there is large amount of wasted space on the page, why not make the print larger?If you are thinking about purchasing this book, look at the preview first. It might be easy to read on a Kindle or IPad.

I saw James Whittaker speak at STAR West in 2011, and he gave a keynote titled "Test Is Dead". His talk was essentially a teaser for How Google Tests Software that he co-wrote with Jason Arbon and Jeff Carollo. The premise of the book is that testers need to have engineering skills (sometimes to an equal extent as software engineers) in order for the testing discipline to reach first class citizenship on equal footing with development.The argument is aligns well with the movement toward agile software development methods. The book goes on to breakdown testing responsibilities for software engineers (SWEs), software engineers in a test role (SETs), and Test Engineers (TEs). Almost half of the book deals with the roles and responsibilities of the TE, and in the Google model, they do have a higher-level role in testing. In essence, it breaks down like this:* SWEs write unit tests for the software they write* SETs write tools to enable testing without external dependencies and write automated functional tests* TEs coordinate the overall testing activities for a product and focus on the user by doing exploratory testingIn addition, the book also outlines a number of tools (many of which have been open-sourced) that Google uses for testing in the context of these roles. The majority of the content focuses on web applications (it's Google after all), and some of the ideas won't apply if the majority of your development is for internal customers to your company - since you probably have user training and rules about frequency of release. However, I would say that you could apply 80% of the ideas in any context and probably adapt at least 10% (if not more) of the others to your situation.Also, there is also a chapter on test managers and directors that has interviews with a number of prominent Googlers. Then, the book ends with a discussion on the future of the SET and TE roles at Google along with some of the errors Google made.Google embarked on the transformation in 2007, and my company is currently trying to do something similar. I hope to be able to leverage these ideas in the months ahead. I recommend it to anyone who is or expects to be involved in such a change. I would also recommend it to any tester in an agile development shop. You may not agree with everything in the book, but tells of the future (if not the present) for much of the software testing industry.

I am not rating the content of the book. I am rating the quality of the physical book. I believe I was shipped a counterfeit book.This is not an original printing of the book. It seems like someone scanned the book and printed it on the wrong sized paper (including a blurry, stretched cover). From reading other comments it sounds like I am not the only one that has received a bootleg copy of this book.

As someone who has read all of the books in the series it has really reached a new low. Whoever owns the rights to the Clancy name should be ashamed they have let such a great series descend to this drivel. It really isn't even a spy novel novel anymore.This is yet another book in which Jack Ryan Jr. falls for an attractive girl pretty much as soon as they meet and spends half is time thinking about how great it would be to sleep with her but that he shouldn't. Yet again Jack Ryan Jr. is driven around by said girl and taught a history lesson that he failed to learn in college as a history major, a major which the author feels the need to constantly remind of us. Even though many of the historical events mentioned are not all that obscure he knows none of them.Jack Ryan is supposed to be a spy and yet the only spy like thing he manages to do is plant a few listening devices. He constantly walks into dangerous situations unprepared and takes the most direct method of trying to learn something. No surveillance of targets is attempted before making an approach. He goes around with no cover identity even though he is the son of the President and yet nobody seems to be able to connect the dots or even mention how funny it is he has the same name as the President. He seems more interested in food and women then in actually spying.The other members of the campus make very few appearances in the book with no real reason given at all. It seemed just like laziness by the author not wanting to have to deal with more then one character. There were plenty of places where Gavin could've been used to help but he was just "busy".Now onto the plot. For the first three quarters of the book its a bunch separate plots with no interaction between them. The main plot line (Jack Ryan Jrs.) is just poor. Based on just a bad feeling they start looking at a Senator and her rich husband. Jack then proceeds to just randomly probe around at their business dealings in Poland looking for something wrong. He does so poorly with no real plan at all. The last quarter of the book is spent tying all these random seeming plot lines together in a way which seems so random and forced that it just doesn't work at all. Its not a mystery that gets solved its just a bunch of random things that just come together. Nobody solves anything they just kind of stumble into the end that really didn't have anything to do with the story. Ryan's whole story line is basically pointless to the conclusion of the story and only tangentially connected.The campus at one point in the book finds out someone is up to something fishy and instead of gathering intelligence or evidence of wrongdoing they just confront the person responsible. It just makes no sense and is just lazy.My final gripe about the book is the bad guys are just stupid/unrealistic. They know Ryan is looking at then trying to find something they are doing wrong. Do they try to hid what they are doing? No they choose to confront Ryan when he knows nothing and they clearly could've just added a little more security and he never would've learned a thing anyway.At present I don't think I will be reading the next book in the series which just really makes me sad.

I have read every Tom Clancy book that has been published and this one is by far the worst of the bunch. In a word, BORING. The last 3 T C books have had the EXACT same formula. Jack Jr is sent somewhere overseas just as he is about to enjoy a vacation with the woman he met in the previous book. . . and suddenly he is called in to work and told to change his plans and go to __________ (fill in the blank destination).Once there, he meets another beautiful woman and begins thinking of her in a romantic way while she helps him on his mission. . . his mission gets her hurt or her family gets hurt and he spends a LOT of time wallowing in misery and self-doubt and self-blame.He eventually completes the mission. . lah-dah-dah-dah-dah.In addition to following this new formula, and I do mean a formula. . . .(in fact, I was wondering if he has a template that is being followed page-by-page that tells him (insert character #2 name here, and insert location #3 here) because the new formula seems SO rigidly followed that I found myself saying, it seems like it's just about time for John Clark to show up and save the day. . . or, it seems like it's about time for Jack Jr to get beat up in an alley again, or, it seems like its about time for a US politician who is now corrupt to send some goons after Jack Jr. .. OR, the newest trope in the series. . .it seems as if its time for the IT superman Gavin, to make an appearance.Finally, there was very little spycraft, and the action scenes were few and not very good, and WAY too much Polish history thrown in for good measure under the heading of research. Too many FOOD scenes, and the whole thing was just boring, boring, boring.Although I have read EVERY Clancy novel. . .I am now done with them. I will not waste my money and time on them any longer. I'll just wait for the next Jack Reacher.
